Process Hazard Analysis Consultants for Safer Plant Design
Independent PHA studies that find the hazards before they find you. HAZID, HAZOP, What-If and Checklist reviews, facilitated by consultants who lead the room rather than just sit in it.
What You Get
The Four PHA Methods We Facilitate
Process hazard analysis is a family of structured studies, not a single tool. We pick the right method for your lifecycle stage and run it as an independent, scored study you can act on the same week.
HAZID Study
An early, structured workshop that names the major hazard categories before drawings are frozen, when design changes are still cheap. The best first move on any new project.
HAZOP Study
A guide-word review of finished P&IDs to surface hazardous deviations and operability gaps. Run by our hazop consultants as a focused facilitation.
What-If Analysis
A flexible, experience-led brainstorm that asks what could go wrong and whether current safeguards hold. Fast to run and useful for operational troubleshooting.
Checklist PHA
A disciplined checklist review against codes, standards and lessons learned. Efficient for simpler or standardised units where the hazards are already well characterised.
Where a scenario needs an engineered safeguard, we extend the study with Layer of Protection Analysis and SIL determination under process safety management. For numerical consequence and risk figures, we pair the PHA with a QRA consultant. For occupational, site-wide risk, use hazard identification and risk assessment.
Why Consultivo
PHA Consultants Who Facilitate, Not Just Attend
Independence, sector depth and outputs you can act on - not a box-ticking file.
IFC World Bank Group approved
The independence and technical rigour that development lenders and international insurers expect for high-hazard, project-financed facilities.
Truly independent
We sell no equipment, no software licences and no instrumentation. Our only product is an unbiased study, which is the quality that matters most.
Trained facilitators
Our process hazard analysis consultants lead the session, keep the team on the node and turn discussion into a clear, scored action register.
Scored risk register
Every study lands as a scored register with heat maps, so leadership can see priority, owner and timeline at a glance.
Multi-standard fluency
IEC 61882, CCPS hazard evaluation practice, OSHA PSM and IFC PS3 - we work to the standard your regulator or lender expects.
India and 19+ countries
Indian statutory depth combined with IEC, ISO and IFC practice, across 2,000+ organisations and 20+ sectors.
Understanding The Study
What Is Process Hazard Analysis?
Process hazard analysis (PHA) is a structured, systematic examination of a planned or existing process to find and evaluate the process safety problems that could put people, equipment or the environment at risk. It looks at equipment, instrumentation, utilities, human action and external events, and asks what can go wrong, how likely it is, and whether the safeguards are enough.
The CCPS (AIChE Center for Chemical Process Safety) defines it as an organised effort to identify and evaluate the hazards of a process. It is required by OSHA PSM in the US and expected by process safety regulation worldwide, and it is the foundation element of any credible process safety programme.
Run well, a PHA delivers real value:
- Early identification of risk, before it becomes an incident
- Compliance with legal and lender risk-assessment requirements
- Development of inherently safer processes
- Reduced operating cost and downtime
- Higher efficiency and profitability
Full form: Process Hazard Analysis. Methods: HAZID, HAZOP, What-If, Checklist. When: concept and FEED through detailed design, revalidation every few years, and after major change. Output: a scored, prioritised action register.
Choosing The Method
When Each PHA Method Applies
The right technique depends on where your project sits in its lifecycle and how well the hazards are already understood.
Concept and FEED
HAZID first, to catch the big hazard categories while design changes are still inexpensive.
Detailed Design
HAZOP on the finished P&IDs, the most thorough, traceable technique for a new plant.
Operations and Troubleshooting
What-If for a fast, experience-led review of a change, a problem or a specific operation.
Standardised Units
Checklist PHA where the process is well understood and codes and lessons learned cover the ground.
Our Approach
How We Facilitate a PHA Study
A structured five-stage approach - independent, rigorous and built to give you outputs you can act on immediately.
Scope and Data
Set the nodes and boundaries, gather P&IDs, process descriptions and statutory requirements.
Team Workshop
Facilitate a structured, multi-disciplinary session, on-site or remote, with the right people present.
Hazard Review
Apply guide words or what-if prompts node by node to expose deviations, causes and consequences.
Risk Evaluation
Score each scenario against tolerability criteria and test whether existing safeguards are enough.
Report and Actions
Deliver a prioritised, scored action register with owners, plus a management debrief.
Sectors We Serve
Industries That Rely on Process Hazard Analysis
Any facility that handles hazardous chemicals, flammable material or high-energy processes needs process hazard analysis. Our consultants bring sector-specific method knowledge to each one.
What You Receive
Deliverables and Standards
Clear, actionable outputs, not just compliance paperwork. Every process hazard analysis comes with a management-ready report and a prioritised action register.
Formal study report
Every node, deviation, cause, consequence and safeguard, fully documented.
Scored action register
Each recommendation ranked by risk, with owner and target date.
Risk matrix and dashboard
Heat maps for leadership review and progress tracking.
Management debrief
A clear readout of critical risks and recommended next steps.
Standards We Work To
- IEC 61882 - HAZOP application guide
- CCPS - Guidelines for Hazard Evaluation Procedures
- OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 - PSM and PHA element
- IFC Performance Standard 3
- ISO 31000 and ISO 45001 - risk and OHS management

FAQ
Process Hazard Analysis, Your Questions Answered
What is the full form of PHA in safety?
PHA stands for Process Hazard Analysis. It is a structured, team-based study that identifies and evaluates the hazards of a process, using methods such as HAZID, HAZOP, What-If and Checklist analysis.
What is process hazard analysis?
Process hazard analysis is a systematic examination of a planned or existing process to find the ways it could release hazardous material or energy, judge how serious and likely each scenario is, and check whether the safeguards are adequate. It is the foundation element of process safety management.
What is the difference between PHA and HAZOP?
PHA is the umbrella discipline; HAZOP is one method within it. A HAZOP is a specific guide-word technique applied to finished P&IDs. Other PHA methods include HAZID for early design, What-If for flexible reviews and Checklist for well-understood processes. We choose the method that fits your lifecycle stage.
Which PHA method should we use?
It depends on lifecycle stage and how well the hazards are understood. Use HAZID at concept and FEED, HAZOP once P&IDs are complete, What-If for operational reviews and troubleshooting, and Checklist for standardised, well-characterised units. Many projects use more than one over their life.
What is a HAZID study?
A HAZID (Hazard Identification) study is an early, concept or FEED stage workshop that names the major hazard categories for a project before detailed drawings exist, when design changes are still inexpensive. It is usually followed later by a HAZOP once engineering is advanced.
When is a process hazard analysis required?
A PHA is expected for any facility handling highly hazardous chemicals above threshold quantities, is required under OSHA PSM and equivalent regimes, is often a condition of IFC or lender financing, and is good engineering practice before commissioning a new plant, after a major change, or on a revalidation cycle.
Who are process hazard analysis consultants and what do they do?
Process hazard analysis consultants are trained facilitators who plan the study, select the method and scope, lead the multi-disciplinary workshop, keep the team rigorous and node-focused, and convert the discussion into a scored, prioritised action register the plant can act on.
Does Consultivo provide independent PHA facilitation?
Yes. Consultivo is an IFC-approved, genuinely independent consultant. We sell no equipment, software or instrumentation, so our PHA facilitation carries no commercial bias, which is exactly what lenders, insurers and regulators look for.
