Understanding CSR Impact Assessment

What is impact assessment in CSR — and why does it matter?

CSR impact assessment is an independent, evidence-based evaluation of the changes — intended or unintended — that a CSR project has produced in the lives of its target communities. It goes beyond activity reporting (“we conducted 200 training sessions”) to answer the question that matters: what actually changed, and by how much?

A rigorous impact assessment compares the end-state of beneficiaries against a baseline assessment established before the project began, using social surveys and field data to quantify social, economic and community-level outcomes. It is the foundation of credible CSR reporting, BRSR disclosure and SROI calculation.

Increasingly, the impact of CSR is being scrutinised by investors, regulators, rating agencies and communities themselves. A well-conducted impact assessment by an independent CSR agency is no longer a compliance box — it is a strategic asset.

When is a CSR impact assessment applicable?
  • At the close of a CSR project or programme cycle (end-line evaluation)
  • Mid-way through a multi-year project (concurrent evaluation)
  • Before a new project begins — to establish the baseline and need (need assessment)
  • For BRSR disclosure — where impact evidence is increasingly expected
  • For investor or board reporting on CSR strategy effectiveness
  • When calculating SROI (Social Return on Investment) for CSR programmes
  • For third-party verification of CSR claims under AA1000 or GRI standards
  • When required by an implementing partner (IP), trust or foundation
MCA / Companies Act 2013: While periodic impact assessment by an independent agency is mandated for CSR projects above ₹1 crore (Rule 8 of the Companies (CSR Policy) Rules, 2014), Consultivo recommends impact assessment as a strategic practice regardless of project size — the evidence it produces informs better decisions for every future project.

01

AA1000 Accredited Assurance — Extended to CSR Impact

Consultivo holds AA1000 accreditation for ESG assurance and sustainability reporting. We extend this same rigour and accreditation framework to third-party independent impact assessment of CSR projects — giving your findings the credibility that investors, boards and regulators expect. No other boutique agency combines this with field-level CSR research capability.

02

Unmatched Geographic, Cultural & Language Experience

We have conducted socioeconomic surveys and impact assessments across 22+ Indian states — covering tribal, rural, peri-urban and urban contexts in multiple regional languages. This means our field teams understand community dynamics, not just data collection protocols. The result is richer, more reliable findings.

22+ states · Multiple languages · Pan-India

03

Data Visualisation, ESG Alignment & SDG Mapping

Our ESG research and analytics capability means impact findings are not just reported — they are visualised, contextualised against GRI, BRSR and SDG frameworks, and presented in formats that serve CSR reports, board briefings, investor packs and public disclosure equally well.

ESGSlate — Proprietary AI Platform for Data & Analytics

Our in-house ESGSlate platform handles data sanitation, validation, statistical analysis and interpretation. This means your impact data is cleaned and checked in real time — not weeks later — and findings are powered by analytics, not spreadsheet intuition. Our Services

Seven CSR impact assessment services — built around your project cycle

Every engagement is designed around your specific project, community and reporting requirements — not adapted from a generic template. Our social survey methodology and research procedure underpin all services.

01

Need Assessment

Identify community needs, gaps and development priorities before your CSR project is designed. A structured need assessment ensures your investment addresses the most critical issues.

  • For companies in project design phase. Prevents misalignment between CSR investment and community reality.

02

Baseline Assessment

Establish the pre-intervention benchmark across social, economic and community indicators. The baseline assessment is the indispensable reference point for every impact measurement that follows.

  • Mandatory before any project whose impact will be measured. Required by most DFIs and recommended for all MCA-regulated CSR projects.

03

Concurrent Monitoring & Mid-term Review

Track implementation progress midway through a project. Identify what is working, what is not, and what needs to change — before it is too late to act on the findings.

  • For multi-year CSR projects and programmes where course correction is possible and donor/board reporting is ongoing.

04

Concurrent Monitoring & Mid-term Review

Track implementation progress midway through a project. Identify what is working, what is not, and what needs to change — before it is too late to act on the findings.

  • Mandated under MCA CSR Rules for eligible projects. Essential for BRSR disclosure, CSR reporting and strategic review.

05

Social Return on Investment (SROI)

Translate the social and community value created by your CSR programme into a financial return ratio. Both Project SROI (single programme) and Composite SROI (full portfolio) conducted using internationally validated methods.

  • For companies seeking to quantify and communicate the financial value of their social investment for ESG disclosures and stakeholder reporting.

06

Multi-project Portfolio Assessment

A consolidated impact assessment across an organisation’s entire CSR portfolio — spanning multiple projects, geographies and thematic areas — with a single, integrated impact report and Composite SROI.

  • For large CSR spenders managing 5+ projects simultaneously. Provides a portfolio-level view that individual project reports cannot.

07

Third-party Verification & Assurance

Independent third-party verification of CSR impact claims — under AA1000 assurance standards — for companies requiring externally verified impact data for sustainability reports and investor-grade ESG disclosures.

  • For listed companies, BRSR disclosers and organisations preparing GRI-certified sustainability reports.
SROI — Social Return on Investment

Translating community impact into financial value

SROI is the gold standard for demonstrating the financial value of social investment. Consultivo conducts both recognised SROI methods — each producing a ratio that tells investors, boards and communities: for every rupee spent, here is what was created.

Project SROI

Calculates the Social Return on Investment for a single CSR project or programme — from need and baseline through to end-line outcomes. Produces a project-level SROI ratio with full narrative and evidence trail.

  • Define scope and identify stakeholders
  • Map and value inputs (financial + in-kind)
  • Identify outputs, outcomes and indicators
  • Establish evidence — baseline vs end-line data
  • Apply deadweight, attribution, drop-off adjustments
  • Calculate SROI ratio with sensitivity analysis
  • Produce verified SROI report

Composite SROI

Aggregates SROI analysis across an organisation’s entire CSR portfolio — multiple projects, geographies and thematic areas — into a single, organisation-level social value ratio. Ideal for annual sustainability reporting.

  • Portfolio mapping — all projects, budgets, beneficiaries
  • Standardise indicator framework across projects
  • Aggregate primary data from all project-level assessments
  • Apply weighting for project scale and maturity
  • Compute composite financial proxy values
  • Calculate portfolio-level SROI ratio
  • Produce portfolio SROI report with SDG mapping

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Questions? We have answers.

what is impact assessment in CSR?
CSR Impact Assessment is a particular type of Social Impact Assessment. It is a systematic evaluation process based on statistical data sampling and on-field impact evaluation. It measures the effectiveness of CSR projects and evaluates to what extent objectives are met.

By conducting impact assessments, companies can identify the areas where they are making a positive impact and where they need to improve their CSR initiatives. This enables them to better align their CSR projects with their business goals and improve their overall performance.

CSR Impact Assessment can be measured on multiple dimensions arising due to the implementation of CSR projects. These dimensions can include social, economic and environmental issues like livelihood, health, education, culture, heritage, lifestyle, quality of life, community impacts, and many others.

For certain projects, impacts on people can be by far the most important consideration.

In our social impact consulting process, we use a structured CSR Impact Assessment Framework – Theory of Change and Logframe approach to evaluate the impacts on individuals and communities, and to mitigate the adverse effects and enhance the positive effects.

The social impact of any development project or responsible investment changes with the life cycle of the project i.e  during pre-comissioning, commissioning, operation and closure.

Social Impact Consulting

Consultivo being a Social Impact Consulting Firm and CSR Impact Assessment Agency in India, provides complete range of customised services in the field of CSR Impact Assessment, Social Impact Assessment & Study and SROI Consulting.

Evaluating the impact of CSR projects is important because it helps organisations not only meet regulatory requirements, but also understand how well their programs are working.

CSR Impact Assessment helps in:

  • Mapping of the stakeholders, their issues & concerns and the priorities
  • Defining the complete (potential) impact intensity. Thus, building more confidence among the investor & the project proponent
  • Taking corrective action & mitigating the negative social impacts, minimising the risks
  • Managing the stakeholders & drawing engagement plans based on the same
  • Ensuring successful implementation of the project by gaining the trust & confidence of the community & stakeholders
  • In India, it helps meeting MCA (Ministry of Corporate Affairs) regulatory compliance for certain projects.
CSR Impact Consulting

Consultivo is a leading CSR impact assessment agency and consultancy firm in India providing end-to-end solutions for CSR Impact Assessment.

Social Impact Consulting Process

Generally, the steps for conducting Social Impact Assessment are:

Planning Stage
  • Identification of stakeholders’ groups and communities impacted by the project
  • Collection of baseline data covering key social issues of the impacted communities such as community history, indigenous communities, culture and key events that have shaped economic and social development, key industries presently and in the past (if relevant); pressures or vulnerabilities experienced by these industry sectors
  • Consideration of government legislation and policies that complement the mitigation measures for social impacts that are directly related to the project.

Execution Stage

  • Gather information, including a description of how the communities of interest were engaged
  • Identify potential direct social impacts and prediction of the significance of any impacts and duration and extent of each impact.
  • List proposed mitigation measures
  • Describe the monitoring framework that informs stakeholders on the progress of implementing mitigation measures and overall project implementations.

Consultivo being a leading CSR impact assessment agency, customises the impact measurement framework to the customers’ need and purpose.

The methods and steps also vary based on the requirements.

The applicability of impact assessment of CSR projects is crucial as it helps organisations to ensure that their CSR efforts are effective and making a positive impact. It enables companies to identify areas where they are making a positive impact and areas where they need to improve their CSR initiatives.
