Human beings always go for a better self through learning and trying to develop new skills.
Extending opportunities for training & developing skill and competence is also a way of combating employees leaving a company.
Training is teaching, or developing in oneself or others, any specific skills and knowledge that relate to specific goals of improving one’s capability, capacity, productivity and performance.”
That’s how the internet defines ‘training’. A simple sentence and a lot of effects!
Let’s concentrate on the key words of this definition for a minute and contemplate.
“Developing” in oneself
Human beings always go for a better self. They spend all their lives learning or honing their talents and trying to develop new skills. Nobody would purposely look for a worse off, less developed version of themselves.
“Improving” one’s capability, productivity and performance
The ability to improve and proceed is completely psychological in nature and yes, it applies to all humans.
Now, this being dealt with, let’s address an important question. “Do organisations which provide training to their employees attract better talent?” The answer to this is as true as it gets. It is a big YES!
Let’s not mix up employment and career. In a study by Linkage, Inc. more than 40% of the respondents said they would consider leaving their present employer for another job with the same benefits if that job provided better career development and greater challenges.
One of the companies in the “Top 100 Places to Work” several years ago found that 70% of those employees who left to take new jobs outside the company could have found the same jobs and careers within.
As a result, they created an internet-based development and career coaching program for all employees. Not only does the program provide new job opportunities, but a host of career & skill development tools such as self-assessments, tools to develop resumes, and articles on various job seeking strategies within the company. Skilled people will not remain in a job if they see no future in their position.
Extending opportunities for training & developing skill and competency management is also a way of combating employees leaving a company. Employees expect perpetual learning opportunities at work. This is a worthy investment for the strategic growth and engagement of the employees.
As an employee looking for a job, one of the things he or she looks for in an organisation is his opportunities to progress and learn. The company offering good training schemes and career consultancy in their package to improve skill and competence more comfortably attracts employees.
And companies get better talents because employees with a forward outlook, ambition and a goal are the ones who look for such training opportunities in companies. That is what an organisation looks for in an employee, the zeal and aim to progress. So, teaming it up with corporate training (Read blog: Learning is best when we team it up with training) will mutually benefit both the employee and the employer, and definitely serve the society through its responsible business.
