Understanding The Study

What Is a HAZOP Study?

HAZOP consultants run a Hazard and Operability study, a structured, team-based examination of your process and instrumentation diagrams that uses guide words to find hazardous deviations and operability problems, one node at a time. It is the most thorough and traceable of the process hazard analysis methods.

The study breaks the design into nodes, then applies standard guide words to each process parameter to ask how the design could deviate from intent, what would cause that, how bad it would be, and whether the safeguards are enough. The recognised reference is IEC 61882, the HAZOP application guide.

A HAZOP is a method within process hazard analysis consultants work. For a faster, early-stage view before P&IDs exist, a HAZID is used instead, and for numerical risk we pair the study with a QRA consultant.

The HAZOP Engine

The HAZOP Guide-Word Method

Structure comes from pairing each process parameter with a standard guide word. That combination prompts a deviation, and the team works out its cause, consequence and safeguard.

Guide Words

NoMoreLess ReverseAs Well AsPart OfOther Than

Parameter

Flow, pressure, temperature, level, composition and more, taken node by node.

Deviation

Guide word plus parameter, for example No Flow or More Pressure.

Cause and Consequence

What could drive the deviation, and how serious the outcome could be.

Safeguard and Action

Existing protection, whether it is enough, and a ranked recommendation.

Timing

When a HAZOP Study Is Needed

A HAZOP study earns its place at several points in a plant's life, not just once.

New plant design

Once P&IDs are complete and before commissioning, the classic HAZOP moment.

Process modification

Any change to chemistry, capacity, layout or control deserves a fresh study.

Periodic revalidation

A cyclic re-run keeps the study live and satisfies most PSM regimes.

Regulator or lender need

When PESO, PNGRB, IFC or an insurer asks for documented hazard study evidence.

Existing plant, no study

A baseline HAZOP for an older facility that has never had one.

After an incident

To confirm whether the same deviation could recur elsewhere on the plant.

Our Approach

How We Facilitate a HAZOP Study

A structured five-stage approach - independent, rigorous and built to give you outputs you can act on immediately.

Scope and Nodes

Agree boundaries, split the P&IDs into nodes and gather the supporting data.

Assemble the Team

Bring process, operations, instrumentation and maintenance into one room, chaired by us.

Guide-Word Review

Work each node through the full guide-word set to expose every credible deviation.

Risk and Safeguards

Score each scenario and test whether existing safeguards reduce it enough.

Report and Actions

Issue a scored HAZOP study report with a prioritised, owned action register.

Sectors We Serve

Industries That Rely on HAZOP

Any facility with piped, pressured or reactive processes benefits from a HAZOP study. Our consultants bring sector-specific knowledge to each one.

FAQ

HAZOP, Your Questions Answered

What is the full form of HAZOP?

HAZOP stands for Hazard and Operability study. It is a structured, team-based technique that uses guide words to examine a process design node by node and find hazardous deviations and operability problems.

What is a HAZOP study?

A HAZOP study is a systematic review of completed process and instrumentation diagrams in which a multi-disciplinary team applies standard guide words to each node to identify how the design could deviate from intent, what the causes and consequences would be, and whether the safeguards are adequate.

What are HAZOP guide words?

Guide words are standard prompts, No, More, Less, Reverse, As Well As, Part Of and Other Than, applied to each process parameter such as flow, pressure or temperature. The pairing generates a deviation, for example No Flow or More Pressure, which the team then analyses.

What is the difference between HAZID and HAZOP?

A HAZID is an early, concept-stage workshop that names the major hazard categories before detailed drawings exist. A HAZOP is a later, more detailed guide-word study run once the P&IDs are complete. Most projects use a HAZID first, then a HAZOP once engineering is advanced.

When should a HAZOP study be carried out?

Run a HAZOP once P&IDs are complete and before commissioning a new plant, after any significant process modification, on a periodic revalidation cycle, when a regulator or lender requires it, for an existing plant that has never had one, and after an incident to check whether the deviation could recur.

What is included in a HAZOP study report?

The report contains the node-by-node worksheets with deviations, causes, consequences and existing safeguards, a scored and prioritised action register with owners, a risk matrix and dashboard, and a management debrief of the critical findings.

Who should facilitate a HAZOP study?

A HAZOP should be chaired by an independent, trained facilitator who is not tied to the design or to any equipment supplier, working with a multi-disciplinary team from process, operations, instrumentation and maintenance. Independence is what keeps the study honest, which is exactly what Consultivo provides.
