What Is Water Neutrality? Water Neutral and Water Positive Explained
Water neutrality means the total freshwater an organisation uses is balanced by measurable water savings. Water positive means the savings and replenishment are greater than the water used. The Indian definition, set out by NITI Aayog with CII, counts water used directly and indirectly, including in the supply chain. In practice, you reduce and reuse water first, then replenish what remains in the region you draw from. Read the NITI Aayog report on the definition and approach for Indian industry.
The Debit and Credit Idea
Think of two columns. The debit is the water you use. The credit is the water you save or replenish. A water positive index is the ratio of credit to debit. As an illustration, a site that uses 100 units and saves or replenishes 100 has an index of 1; at 150 the index is 1.5. The method and the boundary decide what counts in each column, so we set them out first.
An index above 1: credit is greater than debit.
An index of exactly 1: credit equals debit.
An index below 1: credit is less than debit.
Water Positive Assessment: When Credit Exceeds Debit
A water positive assessment checks whether credit is greater than debit. It uses the same baseline and the same boundary as a neutrality assessment, so the two claims are comparable. Any positive claim must state its boundary and its period.

Water Neutrality and Water Positive Consulting: Our Pathway in Four Steps
Our water neutrality study runs in four steps. The same steps serve a water neutral claim and a water positive one.
Step 1: Water Neutrality Baseline Assessment
We set the boundary and build the baseline: water withdrawn, used, recycled and discharged at each site, as a water balance. A water audit builds that balance, and a water footprint assessment can add the water used in your supply chain.
Step 2: Reduce and Reuse in Your Water Neutral Strategy
A water neutral strategy cuts water use first. We find savings in leaks, process use and efficiency, and we run a water reuse and recycling assessment for treated and rain water. Reductions last when they sit inside a management system, so we link this step to our ISO 46001 consulting.
Step 3: Water Replenishment Assessment
We then assess options to replenish what remains, in the basin where your water comes from, because a litre matters more where water is scarce. We estimate the volumes each option delivers, using the method on our watershed water conservation assessment page, and we label each volume measured, estimated or reported.
Step 4: Account and Build the Evidence
We produce a debit and credit statement with assumptions and uncertainty shown, assemble the evidence file and help word the claim precisely. The file is built so that an independent verifier or certification body can follow every number.
Water Positive Strategy: Aiming Beyond Neutral
If you aim beyond neutral, a water positive strategy adds more replenishment or deeper reductions, and tests whether the extra credit holds up. Design-Stage Water Accounting for New Projects
Design-stage water accounting sets the water baseline for a project before it is built. It suits developers, hotels and campuses, where a change at design stage costs far less than a change later. We review demand, recycling, rainwater storage and metering against the drawings, and we show the water balance the project should achieve.

How do you assess water neutrality?

What is the difference between water neutral and water positive?
Water neutral means the water you save or replenish equals the water you use. Water positive means you save or replenish more than you use. Each is calculated by comparing water used (the debit) with water saved or replenished (the credit) over a stated boundary and period.
What is a water positive index?
A water positive index is the ratio of water credit to water debit. Above 1 is positive, exactly 1 is neutral, and below 1 is negative. The boundary and method decide what counts in each.
What counts as a credit?
Credits come from measurable savings and replenishment, such as reduced use, reuse and recycling, and recharge or replenishment in the region you draw from. Which items count, and how, depends on the method and boundary, which we agree with you at the start.
Can you certify us or verify our claim?
No. We do not verify or certify claims. We help you achieve water neutrality and prepare the evidence, so that the independent route you choose goes smoothly.
Who verifies a water neutral claim?
Independent bodies such as verifiers and certification bodies review claims, and institutional certification routes exist in India. You choose the route, and we prepare the evidence file for it.
Do we need ISO 46001 to claim water neutrality?
