Watershed Water Conservation Assessment: Know How Much Water Your Projects Really Conserve
Watershed water conservation assessment from Consultivo shows how much water your watershed, pond and lake projects store and recharge, with every assumption stated. It works for new projects and for existing ones.
01 / What you get
Watershed Water Conservation Assessment: What You Get
You get a clear, comparable answer to one question: how much water do your projects really conserve?
In brief: A watershed water conservation assessment estimates the water stored and recharged by structures such as ponds, farm ponds, lakes and local recharge structures. Consultivo reviews project records, verifies structures in the field where scoped, and reports storage, recharge and annual saving with stated assumptions. We assess projects. We do not design, build or sell them.
Storage and recharge in cubic metres
Site-wise estimates of the storage each structure creates and the groundwater recharge it supports, in units you can report.
Designed against achieved
A comparison of what each structure was meant to do and what it delivers today, with its operating status.
Limits stated plainly
Assumptions, method and limits written down, so a Board, an auditor or a funder can see how each number was reached.
Who This Assessment Is For
- CSR and sustainability heads who fund water projects and must report what they deliver
- Foundations and implementing partners who want an independent view of their work
- Boards and auditors who ask, “How do you know?”
- Companies planning a water neutral or water positive claim that needs conserved volumes as evidence

Honest about limits
Every result is labelled measured, estimated or reported, with its assumptions beside it.
We assess, we do not build
We have no stake in the projects we assess, so our view stays independent.
03 / Method
How a Watershed Assessment Works
A watershed assessment works in five steps: review the records, verify in the field where scoped, estimate storage and recharge, compare designed and achieved results, and report with assumptions and limits. We use practical, field-validated calculation methods aligned with Indian hydrological practice and published recharge guidance.
Step 1: Review the Records
We study project documents, drawings, detailed project reports, completion reports and photographs. We also review rainfall records, water balance data and operating information.
Step 2: Verify in the Field Where Scoped
Where the scope includes site visits, we check each structure on the ground. We measure dimensions and depths, look at storage and recharge features, and judge structural condition and function. Where records are the main source, we say so.
Step 3: Estimate Storage and Recharge
Water storage and recharge estimation starts with the physical size of each structure. Storage comes from surface area and average depth, and we separate usable storage from dead storage. Groundwater recharge assessment follows, where it applies. We estimate recharge from stored water that seeps down and from rainfall that percolates, at stated rates chosen for the soil and rainfall at each site. Our method follows the CGWB Manual on Artificial Recharge of Ground Water, which covers planning, monitoring, impact assessment and economic evaluation of recharge schemes.
Step 4: Compare Designed and Achieved Results
We set the designed potential of each structure against what it delivers. We record whether it is ongoing, completed or functional, and the factors that drive performance, such as siltation, maintenance and rainfall.
Step 5: Report With Assumptions and Limits
You receive a site-wise note for each project and one consolidated report. It carries summary tables of storage, recharge and status, photographs, key risks and gaps, and a plain statement of method, assumptions and limitations.
04 / Scope
Pond and Lake Conservation Assessment: What We Assess
Our pond and lake conservation assessment covers community water projects such as ponds, farm ponds, lakes and local recharge structures. It can also cover a plant-site watershed or other storage by agreement. Our watershed assessment services can cover one project or a portfolio across several states.
We assess new projects, where the question is potential, and existing projects, where the question is achievement. Rainwater harvesting assessment on this page means community and catchment scale. For harvesting inside a plant or campus, see our water audit service.
We do not design, build or operate structures, and we do not obtain regulatory approvals.
Potential for new projects. Achievement for existing ones.
Community and village ponds, new or rejuvenated.
Clusters of farm ponds that store rain for irrigation.
Rejuvenated lakes and larger storage.
Local structures that guide water down to the aquifer.
05 / CSR projects
Water Conservation Impact Assessment for CSR Projects
Many companies need an independent view of their water projects because of the CSR rules. This section explains the rule and where our water assessment fits.
CSR Water Conservation Impact Assessment: What the Rule Asks
Rule 8(3) of the Companies (CSR Policy) Rules, 2014, as amended on 22 January 2021, applies to a company with an average CSR obligation of Rs 10 crore or more over the three preceding financial years. That company must have an independent agency assess its CSR projects with outlays of Rs 1 crore or more that were completed at least one year before the study. The reports go to the Board and are annexed to the annual report on CSR. The cost counted as CSR spend is capped at the lower of 5 percent of that year's CSR spend or Rs 50 lakh. Read the Companies (Corporate Social Responsibility Policy) Amendment Rules, 2021 for the exact text.
Where Our Water Assessment Fits
A full CSR impact study also covers social outcomes such as livelihoods and community use. Our water assessment supplies the technical evidence on storage, recharge and annual saving. Our CSR impact assessment service covers the social side, so both parts can follow one standard. This page does not claim that a water assessment alone satisfies the rule.

07 / Labels
Measured, Estimated or Reported: How We Label Results
Every figure in our reports carries one of three labels. The label beside each number stops an estimate from being read as a measurement.
We or the site measured it, such as a flow or a water level.
We calculated it from dimensions, rainfall and stated rates.
The client or project team gave it to us and we did not measure it.
A base assessment is mostly estimated and reported. If you need audit-grade numbers, add measurement and monitoring from the extensions.
Conserved volumes can also support a water neutral or water positive claim, which needs a baseline and a boundary as well. See our water neutrality consulting service.
08 / Studies
Watershed Assessment in Practice: Two Studies
Two anonymised studies. Each says what kind of result it is and what the study recommended, not what the client did next.
Six Community and Plant-Site Projects in Four States
The company's CSR programme restores ponds and lakes and builds farm ponds near its plants. Each project reported in its own format, so the company had no single answer on how much water its projects delivered.
We applied one method to every site. Storage came from surface area and average depth. Recharge came from seepage of stored water and from rainfall percolation, at stated rates and with local rainfall. Where a project reported its own annual harvested volume, we used it and added recharge conservatively, so nothing was counted twice. A data check found one reported capacity more than a hundred times too small for the structure's dimensions, and we corrected it from the dimensions and flagged the change.
Result type: reported by the client and estimated with stated coefficients, not measured water levels. Storage created and annual water saving each fall in the range of 50 to 100 million litres, and estimated groundwater recharge in the range of 25 to 50 million litres a year, all stated conservatively.
The study pointed to: geohydrological validation, such as water-level monitoring in observation wells, wherever audit-grade numbers are needed.
Storm Water and Abandoned Quarries at a Cement Plant
The plant had almost no meters and drew its water from a river. As part of a wider water audit, we modelled the terrain around the plant to find places where storm water could be stored. The model pointed to two abandoned quarries as low-cost storage for runoff.
Result type: an estimated harvest potential of about 400,000 cubic metres a year, assuming half of the rainfall over the plant area is captured. This is a potential, not a measured saving.
The study pointed to: planning storage in the quarries alongside meters at every major demand point, so that savings can be confirmed once the water is in use.
09 / Independence
How We Keep Advice and Assurance Apart
Where we advised on or built the system behind a number, we do not assure that number.
We assess watershed and water conservation projects; we do not design, build, run or sell the projects we assess. We are an AA1000 licensed assurance provider, and we keep that work apart from our advice. Read our Independence and Impartiality Policy.
10 / Questions
Watershed Water Conservation Assessment: Your Questions Answered
Each answer starts with the direct answer, then adds the detail.
What is a watershed water conservation assessment?
A watershed water conservation assessment estimates how much water a watershed, pond, lake or recharge project stores and recharges, and how much it saves each year. It compares designed potential with achieved results and states its assumptions and limits.
How is water conservation impact measured?
By estimating the storage a structure creates, the groundwater recharge it supports and the water saved each year, with stated assumptions and local rainfall. These are estimates unless backed by measured water levels and flows, and a good report states its limits.
What does a groundwater recharge assessment include?
It estimates the water that moves from a structure down to the aquifer, from stored water that seeps and from rainfall that percolates, using stated rates for the soil and rainfall at each site. It also checks where the water goes, because recharge helps only if it reaches an aquifer that people use.
Do you visit the sites?
It depends on the scope and on the quality of your records. Your quote states what will be verified in the field and what will rest on project records.
How long does an assessment take?
A single-site assessment typically takes four to eight weeks from the start, depending on scope and how quickly data arrives. Programmes across several sites take longer.
Does this meet the CSR impact assessment rule?
Not on its own. Rule 8(3) requires an independent agency to assess eligible CSR projects, and a full study also covers social outcomes. Our water assessment supplies the technical evidence on storage, recharge and saving, and our CSR impact assessment service covers the social side.
Can you assess a project that is still under way?
Yes. For an ongoing project we assess potential and progress to date. The CSR rule applies to projects completed at least one year before the study, so plan the timing if the rule applies to you.
Are the results measured or estimated?
Each figure is labelled measured, estimated or reported. A base assessment is mostly estimated and reported. Measurement and long-term monitoring are optional extensions.
Do you design or build the structures?
No. We assess projects. We do not design, build, run or sell them, which keeps our view independent.
Can the results support a water neutrality claim?
They can supply conserved volumes as evidence. A claim also needs a baseline of water used and a stated boundary. See our water neutrality consulting service.
What decides the quote?
The number of sites, the records you hold, how much field verification you want, and whether you add extensions. We quote after a short scoping call.
