The second edition of ESG Readiness: A Study of CII Member Companies in West Bengal, jointly developed by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Consultivo, presents a data-driven assessment of how industries in West Bengal are progressing on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) parameters.
The CII – Consultivo ESG Readiness Report was officially launched at the CII West Bengal Annual Meeting 2026 on March 02 at Taj Bengal, Kolkata.
Key Findings from the Study
Based on structured responses from 43 member companies, this study offers practical insights into current preparedness levels, emerging trends, and critical gaps.
The findings show that ESG awareness is clearly rising. In the environmental domain, 57.1% of responding companies conducted energy audits in the past two years – an 11.4% improvement over the previous year.
Energy & Environment
About 71.4% actively monitor pollution, and 83.3% have installed pollution control equipment. Waste management shows strong momentum, with 78.6% monitoring waste and 73.8% implementing formal waste management plans. Notably, 85.7% now hold environmental certifications, reflecting a significant 32.9% year-on-year increase.
Climate Action
However, deeper climate action is still evolving. Only 38.1% of companies have systems to track and reduce their carbon footprint. Among them, just 28.57% monitor all three emission scopes (Scope 1, 2, and 3). Renewable energy adoption and structured compliance measures also remain areas for improvement.
Social Practices
On the social front, 59.5% of companies monitor labour practices, while 64.3% have diversity and inclusion policies in place. Encouragingly, 88.1% track community engagement initiatives (a 15.9% increase), and 85.7% are involved in community development activities.
Formal grievance redressal systems for communities are used by 64.3% of respondents. Yet supply chain sustainability remains under-addressed, with only 19% regularly assessing supplier ESG performance.
Governance
Governance indicators show steady strengthening. About 76.2% monitor corporate governance systems, and an equal percentage have anti-bribery and whistleblower policies. Ethical training is widely adopted, with 81% promoting structured ethical practices. Still, only 42.9% report having independent board members, and just 35.7% have implemented formal risk management plans.

Driving Sustainable Growth in West Bengal
However, there is still considerable scope to improve carbon tracking, supply chain monitoring, renewable energy planning, and formal risk management systems.
This second edition builds directly on the insights generated in the first CII–Consultivo ESG Readiness Report (Version 1). While the earlier report captured the early stages of ESG awareness and adoption among industries in West Bengal, the current edition demonstrates tangible progress across multiple parameters.
A higher percentage of companies are now conducting energy audits, strengthening pollution and waste monitoring systems, and securing environmental certifications compared to the previous year.
At the same time, the findings make it clear that ESG maturity is still evolving. Gaps in data quality, the lack of consistent reporting frameworks, and limited tracking of supply chain and carbon performance remain important concerns. By presenting year-on-year comparisons, this edition helps organisations clearly see where improvement has occurred and where focused action is still required to achieve deeper and more integrated ESG implementation.
For business leaders, investors, policymakers, and sustainability professionals, this report provides a practical benchmark of ESG maturity in West Bengal’s industrial ecosystem.
